Inmates Angry After Nevada Bans Typewriters in Jail
Nevada prison officials have confiscated hundreds of portable typewriters from inmates who have used them for decades to tap out legal briefs to appeal their convictions, arguing parts of the machines could be converted into weapons.
The Department of Corrections cited two incidents of violence in recently changing the policy — one when an inmate died and another when a guard was threatened.
Inmates have filed a growing pile of lawsuits protesting the new rule, saying officials are using the security argument as an excuse to try to slow their legal complaints about overcrowded prisons and difficult living conditions…

Pontiac Correctional Center: “Remembering a nightmare”
Saturday, July 22, 1978, began as a peaceful day. Pontiac residents were going about their typical Saturday routine, some were playing golf, some were shopping. Lawns were being mowed.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Nothing, that is, until about 9:45 a.m.
It was at that time when armed inmates began a riot that lasted for most of the day. Three guards were killed and three more injured in what has been described as the worst riot in Illinois Department of Corrections history…

Valley prison officer mourned
Hundreds of law enforcement officials paid their respects to U.S. Penitentiary Atwater correctional officer Jose Rivera during a service Friday at St. Patrick's Parish in Merced.

A four-hour standoff in East Oakland between police and an armed parolee who didn't want to leave his grandfather's home ended peacefully Sunday night after police negotiators succeeded in talking the man into surrendering, officials said.
