Could You Do The Job? (EDITORIAL)

by Patti Sewall, Editor of PEACEKeeper

I've been on this job for 17 years now, and the negative, one-sided, factually–challenged reports about the people in corrections, more specifically, the members of this union, still get me fuming. I simply don't understand that kind of blind dismissal. Early on in my career at CCPOA, I visited a few of our correctional institutions to get to know the people and the environment I would be writing about, to get a glimpse into the life of a professional correctional peace officer. I walked the yard at Calipatria State Prison, right past groups of felons whose grimaced stares made me more than a little apprehensive...

From the President:

by Mike Jimenez, CCPOA

Recently, I met a correctional peace officer who in his eight years with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation knows quite a bit about what it's like to work the toughest beat in the state. Now assigned to the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, C.O. Ian Pickett spent much of his career at the maximum-security Calipatria State Prison. LOI Inferno

Clearing the hazardous debris from your employe file

by Phillip Auzins, CCPOA Field Representative, West Sacramento

This article examines and challenges the removal process of the Letter of Instruction, more commonly referred to as an LOI, from the employee's file. For those of you unfamiliar with the LOI, it is normally issued to staff as a corrective teaching and learning tool, and is not to be confused with a disciplinary action. Simply put, it is a documented discussion for the purpose of correcting errant behavior...

Lemonade Stand: How CCPOA is putting a bad LBFO to good use

by Dan Lindsay, CCPOA Chief of Arbitration Division, West Sacramento

In mid-September 2007, the state employer, through the actions of the Department of Personnel Administration, imposed what CCPOA believes to be an illegal Last, Best, and Final Offer (LBFO). The state contends this LBFO replaces the 2001-2006 Memorandum of Understanding. CCPOA disagrees with this position. The matter is currently being litigated before PERB...
