Two minimum security inmates escaped Saturday night from the Salinas Valley State Prison just north of Soledad, spokesman Lt. Michael Nilsson said.
Nilsson said Omar Ramirez, 32, and Yovanni Peralta Diaz, 22, were discovered missing at 9:44 p.m. by staff during a count at the Minimum Support Facility.
Shortly after the discovery, he said, the facility’s escape pursuit plan was launched, and administrative staff and local law enforcement agencies were consequently notified...

Riot at Salinas Valley State Prison spurs inquiry into use of deadly force
A use-of-deadly-force investigation is under way following a riot Thursday afternoon at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad in which correctional officers fired live rounds to quell the fighting. No inmates were hit.

Paso Robles boys school in ‘warm’ closure
El Paso de Robles Youth Correctional Facility officially shut its doors on July 31 for what state officials referred to as a "warm closure" with most of its existing employees landing jobs in San Luis Obispo, Soledad and Salinas.
Spokeswoman Josi Slonski said the majority of the Paso Robles boys school staff was placed within the adult division of California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation at California Men's Colony, CDCR's Correctional Training Facility in Soledad and Salinas Valley State Prison.
Effective Aug. 1, an estimated five employees were to stay at the facility including maintenance personnel to keep the institution running, Slonski said. Effective last Friday, the institution was officially to be referred to as the Estrella Correctional Facility and shed its former name…

To provide medically necessary health care to inmates, Corrections operates four types of health care facilities: four general acute care hospitals, 14 correctional treatment centers, 13 outpatient housing units, and one skilled nursing facility. Additionally, it contracts with the Department of Mental Health to provide all inpatient acute mental health services to certain inmates at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville and to some of the inmates at the correctional treatment center at Salinas Valley State Prison. For care not available in its own facilities, Corrections contracts with medical service providers in the surrounding communities, including hospitals. Table 1 presents the types of health care facilities, the number of doctors available on site, the average daily inmate population, and the average daily inmate population per doctor at each institution during fiscal year 2002-03.

Follow-Up on Inmate Appeals Process Review Salinas Valley
This report represents the results of a follow-up review conducted by the Office of the Inspector General of the inmate appeals process and the inmate disciplinary process at Salinas Valley State Prison. The follow-up review, conducted in July 2003, was performed under the Inspector General's oversight responsibilities delineated in California Penal Code Section 6126. The Office of the Inspector General's original audit report, issued on March 22, 2000, found serious problems with both the inmate appeal process and the inmate disciplinary process at Salinas Valley State Prison. This follow-up review found that Salinas Valley State Prison has significantly improved the inmate appeal process.

Audit: Inmate Appeal & Disciplinary Process, Salinas Valley (SVSP)

This report presents the results of the Office of the Inspector General's audit of the disciplinary process and procedures for handling inmate complaints at Salinas Valley State Prison. The audit was conducted during February 2000. In August 1999, the California Department of Corrections (CDC) formed a threat assessment team to assess the operations of the Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP). The threat assessment was conducted at the request of then-Acting Warden Anthony A. Lamarque of SVSP over concerns about the possibility of a consipiracy by a gang or gangs to assault staff at the institution. The assessment also included an evaluation of general conditions affecting the overall operation of the state prison.
