Schwarzenegger star falls as California hits hard times

…The union that represents California's prison guards is trying to kick Schwarzenegger out of office halfway through his second term, saying his "inept management" and "gross fiscal mismanagement" has hurt the state badly.

Despite a setback last week, when they had to rewrite their petition to meet state regulations, union leaders say they hope to get the 1 million signatures needed to approve a gubernatorial recall election by as early as June. "Schwarzenegger loves to say, 'I'll be back,' but we don't want him back," said Nichol Gomez, spokeswoman for the California Correctional Peace Officers Association.

Schwarzenegger and his supporters have said that the recall effort is political payback for the governor's opposition to pay raises for prison guards. But the angst lately in California over "the Governator" goes deeper than that. Even some in his own party say it might be time to recall Schwarzenegger and replace him with someone else…

California Secretary of State Tells Union To Revise Recall Petition Against Schwarzenegger

California's Secretary of State sent back Tuesday the recall petition against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the state prison guards union for revision.

Debra Bowen gave the California Correctional Peace Officers Association 10 days to include the governor's response to its petition and the corrected format for listing addresses of signers. Bowen said the inclusion of the response of the person to be recalled in the petition is a legal requirement under California's Elections Code.

The union submitted the recall petition on Sept. 29 on grounds of poor performance by the governor and his alleged mismanagement of the state's finances…

It’s Politics: Spence may back recall movement

West Covina Republican Mike Spence doesn't like Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Spence recently called on the state Legislature to choose a bill with bipartisan support that Schwarzenegger had vetoed, and override it - just to embarrass the governor.

Now he's willing to consider supporting a Schwarzenegger recall effort being mounted by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association.

Spence is president of the California Republican Assembly and the group will consider supporting the recall during a board meeting at 4p.m. today…

Prison guards re-elect Jimenez after ejecting reporters

Members of the state prison guards' union today re-elected as its president Mike Jimenez, who has initiated a recall effort aimed at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Asked if the vote for him was a vote for the union's effort to recall the governor, Jimenez said, "I don't take it as a referendum."

He said the union intends to move forward with the effort to unseat Schwarzenegger. One correctional officer yelled "Off to the recall" as he exited the meeting after vote, from which the press was excluded…

Labor leader Pelote joins Recall Arnold drive

Many Capitol observers have dismissed the recall of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as a political ploy cooked up by the state prison guards union to tweak the governor and help the embattled head of the union secure reelection. But a closer look at the recall petition filed last week shows some other labor heavyweights are interested in the possibility.

Willie Pelote, the head lobbyist for the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees was among the 85 people who signed the recall petition submitted to the Secretary of State by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association last week.

"We're in worse goddamn shape than when we had Gray [Davis], so you can make of that what you will," Pelote said Monday…

Budget Update: New taxes off the table?

Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata told his Democratic caucus Friday that he and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger are willing to back off on demands for new taxes to end California's 75-day-long budget stalemate.

In an e-mail obtained by The Bee, Perata wrote that he told Schwarzenegger on Thursday, "Let's see if I can work on a deal with (Republicans) that is no tax, no borrowing. He agreed."

Perata said that he plans to work with Republicans through the weekend to try to reach a budget deal…

Opinion: “California’s lousy governor who cannot be trusted”

From the moment he declared himself a candidate in the 2003 recall election that drove Gov. Gray Davis from office, so-called experts have warned Californians never to underestimate Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now it's beginning to look like they got it all wrong. They should have been cautioning voters not to overestimate the muscleman actor, an admitted former steroid user and serial groper of women.

It's not just that Schwarzenegger has now been revealed as something short of a political genius, but also that he's gone back on his word so often no one can trust him anymore. On almost anything.

Some observers have used the term "buffoonery" to describe his clumsy and heavy-handed August attempts to negotiate a state budget: A series of threats and promises and attempted executive orders, none of which produced the slightest movement among legislators. It now appears that Schwarzenegger will sign almost any budget handed to him just to get the whole matter out of his hair so he can go spend weekends at his place in Sun Valley, Idaho.

First he "ordered" state Controller John Chiang to cut the pay of many state workers to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 per hour. Chiang refused, Schwarzenegger sued, but workers got their August paychecks in part because Schwarzenegger's legal effort did not bother to include a try for a temporary restraining order on Chiang's check-writing…
