Support for Proposition 93 Dives
In what looks like an outright collapse at the end of a long campaign to change term limits, support for Proposition 93 dipped to its lowest level just as voters are prepared to head to the polls Tuesday. Only 33 percent of would-be voters say they support the ballot measure while 46 percent are opposed, according to a Field Poll whose results were released this morning. The dramatic drop coincides with a total reversal among Republicans, once the biggest backers of the proposal. Republicans oppose the measure by 2-to-1 - 56 percent to 27 percent - despite Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's belated endorsement of the measure two weeks ago…

February 2008 Election Recommendations
Fellow Unit 6 Members,
We are on the eve of the first of an unprecedented three elections in California. Over the last five years, Californians have seen many elections, but never three in a single year. The people of California are known for being at the forefront of unprecedented change; however, change has never before required the popular decision of voters three times in one year. And in truth, this year doesn't either.
Unfortunately, this first election in 2008 is more about the maintenance of political power rather than what is good for Californians. The February 5, 2008, election will cost the people of California tens of millions of dollars. The politicians say that the election is necessary to make California a player in the Presidential election. That may be the party line but the reality is much more sinister. An unnecessary election, at a time when the state is in financial crisis, illustrates quite clearly that some politicians rate their own agendas above all else.
Your CCPOA Political Action Committee has decided to take the positions on the propositions on the reverse side of this mailer. We have studied and discussed the issues thoroughly, and would greatly appreciate your support by voting consistent with the position we've taken. We are still all in this together.
Thank you for your time, please vote on February 5 and please be safe.

California Correctional Peace Officers Association

Perata, Nunez are biggest contributors to term limits measure
Incumbent Democratic lawmakers have donated or raised nearly $1.4 million for the Proposition 93 campaign, fueling accusations that the measure to alter term limits is a power grab. Fourteen Democratic Assembly members and three senators contributed money in their own name, while numerous others gave to special committees used by colleagues to solicit funds for the effort, records show. The two largest legislative contributors are Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, $350,000, and Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, $300,000. The measure would give them an extra four years and six years in office, respectively…

Poll tough for term limit, gambling props
Ballot measures to change the Legislature's term-limit rules and boost the number of slot machines in some Indian casinos face a tough, uphill slog if they are going to win on Feb. 5, a new Field Poll indicates. The news is grimmest for Proposition 93, which would allow current legislators to spend as much as six more years in the Assembly or four more years in the state Senate…

Term Limits Campaign Turns to TV Battle
The campaign to change California's legislative term limits has become a televised advertising battle, as the opponents of the measure have launched two advertisements, while proponents of the measure will begin airing ads on Tuesday all the way through Feb. 4, according to public records. The No on 93 campaign reported $250,000 worth of unspecified media buys in filings made with the secretary of state's office late last week.
Campaign strategists announced their first two ads today, which they say are airing in "select" media markets. That $250,000 is a relatively tiny sum in California, where it takes millions to pay for a sustained statewide ad campaign…

Prison Guards Union to Oppose Term-Limits Measure
The state correctional officers union on Friday reversed its earlier support of the Proposition 93 term-limits initiative and is promising to "put in as much as it takes" to help defeat the measure championed by Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez of Los Angeles. "We haven't determined the overall number yet, but we have not been shy in the past in spending money on causes we believe in," said Lance Corcoran, the spokesman for the California Correctional Peace Officers Association…
