Governor Brown Joins CDCR to Honor Employees at 27th Annual Medal of Valor Ceremony
SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. today honored 48 employees during the department’s annual Medal of Valor Ceremony. Employees were recognized for extraordinary bravery and conduct above and beyond the call of duty, often in lifesaving incidents where public safety was at risk.
Governor Brown had praise for the award winners and their tireless dedication to public safety.
“These men and women exemplify what it means to serve the people of California,” said Governor Brown. “On behalf of all Californians, we honor their courage, commitment and resolve...”

Calipatria prison employee to be honored for heroic deed
A Calipatria State Prison employee is slated to receive a commendation following his rescue of a family of four this week from a partially submerged vehicle that plunged into the Central Main Canal off Austin Road, an official said Thursday.
Jesus Coronado, who oversees health care access for inmates, is going to be recommended for a medal of valor for his heroic deed Wednesday by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said Administrative Lt. Jorge Santana. The award ceremony would be in May in Sacramento, Santana said.
A press release of the incident that was reported at 4:59 p.m. had not been issued by the California Highway Patrol since no injuries were reported, said Highway Patrol Officer Pablo Torrez. Non-injury crashes are not covered in press releases by the Highway Patrol, Torres said...

Corrections officer awarded Medal of Valor for protecting fellow officers during fight
Elizabeth O'Campo doesn't talk much about the day when she put her own life at risk to help rescue two fellow corrections officers.
O'Campo, an Ontario native, was working Oct. 6, 2006, with two male officers searching cells at Ironwood State Prison near Blythe when they discovered drugs and other contraband - which in prison is worth 10 times more than outside, she said.
"You could just feel the tension," O'Campo said. They were pounced on by a group of inmates - more than 20 people joined in on the attack, she said. In the midst of being punched and kicked by the inmates, O'Campo said she could see one of her colleagues down on the ground…

Six Pelican Bay officers awarded Bronze Stars
Six employees at Pelican Bay State Prison were honored last week by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for life-saving actions.
The awards were presented by CDCR Secretary James Tilton at a ceremony in Sacramento. Nearly 100 corrections employees received awards that ranged from the Medal of Valor to Unit Citations.
Correctional Sergeants Gregory Gordon and Kathy Ohland, and Correctional Officers Will Baptista, Joseph Ross, Pamela Russell and Donald Thomas were all awarded the Bronze Star medal…
