Political ads: It’s getting really nasty out there
Is anybody fit for office any more? A Florida congressman casts his foe as a religious extremist, "Taliban Dan." A challenger in West Virginia stresses a lawmaker's Arab-American ancestry as shadowy and foreign. Other candidates are nothing but liars, misers, cheaters, even traitors, judging by the 30-second TV attacks.
Deep-pocketed independent political groups are making the 2010 election homestretch the most scathing in years. In the frantic final days before the voting, a blitz of negative ads is hitting the air in more than two dozen tight congressional races.
The ads warn that candidates who say they're on your side actually care more about Arabs or illegal immigrants - take your pick - than about you. And the other guy seeking your vote? Why, he'll simply make stuff up to get it.
This is personal. But often anonymous...

California Alliance IEC steps up for Jeandron in AD-78
An outside group has finally stepped up to the plate for Republican Gary Jeandron in the 78th Assembly District.
Monday, the California Alliance for Progress and Education, described as a group of "professionals, employees and small businesses," spent $172,440 on polling, research, and producing and airing a television ad supporting Jeandron's campaign against Democrat Manuel Perez.
Before the Alliance's spending spree, only one outside group, the Califonia Correctional Police Officers Association, had spent money on Jeandron's behalf, and a relatively small investment, at that (just $7,645)…

3 crime initiatives await voters in November
They're not dueling initiatives. But a pair of anti-crime measures on the Nov. 4 state ballot could hardly be more different in their approach to improving California's criminal justice system.
Proposition 5 would divert more drug addicts and nonviolent offenders from prison to rehabilitation programs. Proposition 6 would set aside money for anti-crime agencies and put more convicts - gang members in particular - behind bars. One would shrink the prison system, the other make it bigger.
The resulting battle has backers of the measures trading accusations - not only about whether the proposals would work, but whether the other side's motives are pure. Prop. 5, opponents say, is just a step toward legalizing drugs. Those who oppose Prop. 6 call it a money grab by law enforcement…

Marsy’s Law: Under Prop. 9, victims’ rights would be made constitutional
This year, California voters have several important decisions before them on Election Day, not the least of which is who they choose for president. But for millions of California crime victims, this election will determine whether balance is brought to the state's justice system, ensuring that the rights of criminals no longer supersede the rights of victims and their families.
Proposition 9, or Marsy's Law, honors among others Marsy Nicholas, a 21-year-old student at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her boyfriend ended her promising life with a shotgun blast at close range. While Marsy's mother, Marcella, and family were grieving, experiencing pain unlike anything they'd ever felt, their only comfort was knowing that the murderer had been arrested and was behind bars. Can you imagine Marcella's agony when she came face-to-face with Marsy's killer days later … at the grocery store? Marsy's killer was free on bail. No one had told the family. No one was required to do so…

Prison guards re-elect Jimenez after ejecting reporters
Members of the state prison guards' union today re-elected as its president Mike Jimenez, who has initiated a recall effort aimed at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Asked if the vote for him was a vote for the union's effort to recall the governor, Jimenez said, "I don't take it as a referendum."
He said the union intends to move forward with the effort to unseat Schwarzenegger. One correctional officer yelled "Off to the recall" as he exited the meeting after vote, from which the press was excluded…

“Defeat of Prop 93 will bring wholesale leadership changes”
It failed by about 7 percentage points, despite support from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and a who's who of labor unions, corporations and professional groups that poured nearly $16 million into the Yes-on-93 campaign. Opponents raised more than $7 million, fueled primarily by $2.5 million from state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and $2 million from the prison guards' union. Defeat of the initiative means that Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, Senate Minority Leader Dick Ackerman, R-Tustin, and 31 other incumbents will be barred from running for re-election this year…
