A Corcoran C/O gets his letter to the editor on furloughs printed in the paper
I like my job as a correctional officer, but I am alarmed by the lack of concern for public safety and the safety of officers who work at our prisons.
Our governor declared that the state Assembly lacks guts to cut prison costs. I find that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger lacks the experience to lead our state. He has shifted the burden for the state's debt to counties and cities by taking badly needed funds from their budget to fix the state's budget.
Shifting responsibility is not an answer. It's a cowardly way of making someone else deal with a problem that's wholly the state's responsibility. Shifting inmates to overcrowded county jails and disregarding sentencing guidelines by creating new ones, and letting inmates go to save money, only sends a signal to cities and counties that the state will disregard public safety in order to shirk responsibility to protect the public…

COS plans prison-officer training program in Corcoran
College of the Sequoias plans to train correctional officers within two or three years, school officials said. The training would take place in Corcoran. Corcoran city officials approached COS several months ago about an anchor program for its Teacher Educational Job Training Center, which the city is building.
"[A correctional training program] really makes sense," said Darrell Frey, Corcoran Chamber of Commerce president. "We are the hub of the prisons right here."
Corcoran is home to Corcoran State Prison, which has the state's largest inmate population, and a second prison, California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility. The only training facility for correctional officers is in Galt, south of Sacramento…

"Memorial Day is not just about remembering our fallen heroes," said Bill Morland, an American Legion committee member. "All of us must stop and reflect how the pursuit of happiness is maintained in this country."
Representatives laid wreaths at a set of empty boots, a rifle and helmet — a symbol of the more than 475,000 service members killed in action since World War II, Garcia said…

Inmate Appeals Process Review CSATF
This report presents the results of a review conducted by the Office of the Inspector General of the inmate appeals process at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran. On March 17, 2000, Inspector General Steve White advised former California Department of Corrections Director Cal Terhune by memorandum that the Office of the Inspector General would review the inmate appeals process at various institutions. The Office of the Inspector General selected the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility as one of the institutions to undergo such a review, in part because of complaints from inmates to the Office of the Inspector General about the institution's appeal process. The review was conducted on November 7-9, 2000 and December 4-6, 2000.
