No inmate release plan yet at California Men’s Colony

California Men's Colony officials don't yet know how the prison may be affected by the potential release of inmates statewide — but they acknowledge the San Luis Obispo facility is overcrowded.

Three federal judges have ordered state officials to come up with a plan by mid-September to shrink the California prison population by 40,000 to reduce overcrowding.

Mental-health center could be built at California Men’s Colony

The California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo has been targeted for a $63.7 million facility where state prison inmates would be treated during mental-health crises, CMC officials say.

The state Department of Public Works is overseeing the planning of the stand-alone building at the prison and aims to have it open by 2013.

Enclosed is the Office of the Inspector General's final report on its inspection of medical care delivery at California Men's Colony. Consistent with our agreement with the receiver, the purpose of our inspection was to evaluate and monitor the progress of medical care delivery to inmates at the institution. CMC to pay $40,000 for sewage spill

The California Men's Colony will pay a $40,000 settlement for alleged violations of the correctional facility's wastewater discharge permit.

The settlement, worked out in an agreement between the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board executive officer and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, is the full amount included in a complaint issued against CMC by the water board staff.

State to fight CMC sewage penalties

The California Men's Colony prison faces another $175,000 in fines for more polluted discharges from its sewage treatment plant.

This is the latest in a long string of wastewater violations at the prison west of San Luis Obispo.

However, there's a new twist this time around. The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is planning to challenge a $40,000 fine for a sewage spill that took place in January.
