Concerns raised about 1,900 more Wasco inmates

With a state prison that's poised for expansion in their backyard, city officials shared some concerns at a Wednesday meeting with state planners working on an environmental report about the proposed growth.

The expansion at Wasco State Prison is part of Assembly Bill 900, which Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed in 2007. The idea is to replace nontraditional beds in areas such as gyms and dayrooms with beds in cells. Wasco could hold 1,900 more inmates, bringing its total number to 8,000 men.
