Correctional Officer Tommy Hayes– The body of Lancaster Correctional Officer Tommy Hayes was discovered earlier today in the aqueduct along which he had been taking a walk last night. A candlelight vigil will be held in Palmdale tonight at 8:00 pm and will take place at P-12 and 25th Street West in Palmdale, behind Highland High School. Our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Officer Hayes.
Labor Update– CCPOA’s Chief of Labor Steve Weiss has issued two new memos detailing recently reached agreements with the state. The first memo concerns a statewide agreement regarding the California Identification Card Pilot. The second memo addresses two local agreements reached at High Desert State Prison regarding Medical Realignment in Ad-Seg and the other covers “Additional Activities at Facility B Gym. Please take a moment to view these memos and the attached agreements if interested. They are posted on the front page of the website.
FMLA Usage – We’ve also posted a document from CDCR reviewing the changes effective January 1, 2012 to the Family & Medical Leave usage procedures. The memo is dated September 29 and is also posted on the website.
Sample Ballots Out– The sample ballots for the upcoming CCPOA Chapter elections are out and available on-line under “Elections and Events.”
New Peacekeeper Available on CCPOA.org– Also, the latest edition of the Peacekeeper is now available online. We have a link on the front page of the website for your convenience.
CDCR NEWS
CCA Seeking CA Inmates for Minnesota, Colorado– It was reported earlier this week that Corrections Corporation of America was still seeking to fill two of its empty prisons in Minnesota and Colorado with California inmates. At least one state legislator in Minnesota went on the record indicating that he did not expect CA inmates to show up in his state. CDCR recently cancelled a private prison contract in Michigan to house California inmates.
Hunger Strike Returns to CA Prisons– A few thousand inmates across the state are renewing their hunger strike which they began a few weeks ago. CDCR’s Matt Cate believed he had addressed their concerns last time and told the media this week he wasn’t sure why the inmates decided to strike again. The article is linked on our website.

Rick Perry & Private Prisons– A couple of news stories surfaced last weekend about the ties between Texas Governor and Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry and the private prison industry. The article is also on the website if you’d like to read more.
NOTICES
Camps Chapter Meeting– Will be holding their next statewide meeting on October 13, 2011 from 10am to 6 pm at CCPOA Headquarters. We have posted a flyer on the website with more details and RSVP information.
MTA Chapter Meeting– Will be held on October 22, 2011 at the Beach Resort in Monterey from 9-5 pm. Please see the flyer on the website for more details and RSVP information.
CCPOA State BOD Meeting/Memorial– Updated: The annual “Correctional Peace Officer Memorial” has been scheduled at CCPOA Headquarters for Friday, October 28 at 4:00 pm. The state board of directors meeting will be held the following day, Saturday the 29th at the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza, Sacramento.
CCPOA Benefit Trust– Open enrollment allowing for changes to your medical and dental plans begins October 10 and will continue through November 4.
