Fool's Gold (EDITORIAL)by Patti Sewall, Editor of PEACEKeeperWhen my family first moved to Sacramento from Southern California many years ago, we became quite familiar with Folsom Lake and the wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities it offered. As a youngster, what I loved the most was the shoreline that was much different from the sandy, salt water beaches I was used to. At Folsom Lake, the beaches gave off a kind of rocky glow that had kids of all ages falling to their knees to collect the flat and shiny pieces of fragile gold sand that dotted the lake shore. At first glance, it appeared we had found our fortunes. However, closer inspection proved we had been teased by one of nature's many perfect little tricksters-Fool's Gold. We had been enticed by something shiny and new, encouraged by the glitter of a million gold bits drawing us into their make believe promises of riches beyond compare. We were kids. And as we grew older and matured, it became easier to spot the differences between make believe and reality in our world. We soon learned to ignore the bewitching glimmer from the warm sand beneath our feet. As CCPOA and its members sift through the gritty debris of prison crisis solutions being tossed about by an administration that seems to change its mind with each new day, we're focusing on real solutions to the very real prison problems as only CCPOA members can see them-from the front lines. In the face of all that is negative right now in California politics, CCPOA is thinking positive and moving forward, refusing to be fooled by a product that lacks substance and strength. Our website has been revamped and we're committed to providing our members with the most up-to-date information possible about the issues crucial to them as they navigate through their careers in corrections. We have just released a new documentary on the prison crisis that was created out of fact, not sensationalism; we're consolidating offices to better serve the membership; and we're promising better attention to member communication. Information is power, after all. On that note, CCPOA has some advice for Californians who may find themselves bewildered by the hype surrounding the budget and the prison crisis. Don't be tempted by the glitter falling at the feet of the ill-informed. Look instead for what is real. Brush away the glimmering dust of changing stories and shifting positions from an administration unsure of its own identity. It's just Fool's Gold. Learn how to spot it and how to ignore it.
