CCPOA & PEACEKeeper Magazine Presents: California Pens :: California Correctional Institution (CCI)March 19 - In Facility 4B, an inmate was being escorted back to his cell from the shower when the inmate suddenly attacked the escorting officer. The inmate had attached a stabbing weapon to his shoe, kicked the officer in the lower body, inflicting a puncture wound to the thigh and an abrasion to the shin. Another officer sustained a possible broken foot and a third officer was exposed to blood. All three officers were transported to an outside hospital for treatment. February 6 – An inmate in Housing Unit 5 at Unit 4B threw an unknown liquid through the food port as an officer was collecting the food trays. The officer utilized pepper spray on the inmate in order to secure the food port and eliminate any further threat. January 22 - Unit II Facility Dorm 6 officers observed two inmates acting suspicious. The officers conducted unclothed body searches on the inmates and one was discovered with a puncture wound to his left shoulder. It was discovered that the inmate was stabbed with a pencil. ISU responded and secured the crime scene and processed the evidence. January 20 - On Unit IVB, an officer was attempting to remove the restraints on an inmate through a food port. The inmate grabbed the officer's hand and as the officer attempted to pull away, the cover officer deployed an OC grenade at the feet of the inmate. The officer received minor scratches and abrasions to the hand. January 17 - Two inmates on a unit were observed fighting by staff. Staff ordered the inmates to assume a prone position. The inmates complied with staff orders and were placed in restraints. During the escort one of the inmates attempted to head-butt the escorting officer. The officer utilized physical force and forced the inmate to the ground. No injuries to staff were reported. January 5 - During an escort to a holding cell, an inmate used his shoulder and struck the officer in the chest. A baton strike and physical force was utilized to gain control of the inmate. The inmate suffered an abrasion to the shin area. There were no injuries to staff. December 21 – A SHU inmate appeared to be having a seizure in his cell. When the inmate was transported via gurney to the medical clinic, it was determined that the inmate was under the influence of alcohol. As medical staff was examining the inmate, the inmate began to spit in the face of staff. Staff utilized force options to get the inmate to comply with orders to stop. December 20 – An ASU inmate threw an unknown liquid substance on an officer. October 29 - In Facility 4B, an inmate was being escorted back to his cell from the shower, when he suddenly attacked the escorting officer. The inmate, who had attached a stabbing weapon to his shoe, kicked the officer in the lower body, inflicting a puncture wound to the thigh and an abrasion to the skin. Another officer sustained a broken foot, and a third officer was exposed to blood. All three officers were transported to an outside hospital for treatment. June 4 - An inmate committed sexual battery on another inmate. The inmates were showering when one inmate grabbed the other by the testicles. The inmate began hitting the assaultive inmate in the face. Staff stopped the fight and both inmates were placed in ASU. June 4 - An inmate bleeding from his wrist approached an officer. When the officer looked at the cut, the inmate pulled a razor out of his pocket and attempted to slash the officer. The officer utilized pepper spray and the inmate submitted to the placement of handcuffs. The officer was not injured. The inmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his wounds. June 3 - Three SHU inmates battered another inmate while on a controlled exercise yard. Staff ordered the inmates to stop with negative results. Staff then fired multiple 40 mm rounds to stop the fight. There were minor injuries to the involved inmates, but no staff injuries as a result of the incident. May 5 - An LVN was treating an inmate when he lunged at the nurse and cut her forearm with a razor. Physical force was used to control the inmate. A subsequent search of the inmate's cell yielded two additional weapons. The LVN was taken to an outside hospital for treatment. May 2 - In Ad Seg, an inmate appeared to have a seizure in his cell. Staff responded and called for medical. As staff prepared to conduct a medical extraction, the inmate sprang to his feet and charged staff. Staff utilized pepper spray, baton and physical force to subdue and restrain the inmate. One officer was cut in the neck, another officer suffered a swollen knee and a third officer sustained abrasions to the arm. Two of the officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries and for exposure to blood. May 1 - Floor officers were in the process of retrieving food trays when an Ad Seg inmate shoved his tray through the cell port and threw his food at one of the officers. The inmate continued to reach his arm through the port to strike the officer, who utilized pepper spray to stop the attack. April 29 - California Correctional Institution - Staff observed two inmates with injuries consistent with being involved in mutual combat. Both inmates were placed in handcuffs and escorted to the medical clinic for a medical evaluation. One inmate was transported to an outside hospital. Both combatants were re-housed into ASU. CLICK HERE for CCI archive. April 28 - California Correctional Institution - A Correctional Officer went into IVA Housing Unit 1 to investigate noise coming from a cell. The Officer observed what appeared to be an inmate committing battery on another inmate. The Officer activated his personal alarm and utilized his MK-9 fogger to stop the battery. Upon medical evaluation, the victim inmate notified the on-duty physician that the inmate assailant attempted to sexually assault him. Both inmates were transported to an outside medical facility. CLICK HERE for CCI archive. April 26 - California Correctional Institution - A Code 1 alarm was announced outside the Unit II Dining Hall #1. Responding staff utilized O.C. pepper spray to stop the attempted murder of an inmate with an inmate manufactured weapon. Two inmates were suspected assailants on another inmate. All three inmates were placed in restraints. Medical staff responded and provided aid to the victim inmate who was ultimately sent to an outside hospital. A razor blade attached to a pencil with string and tightly rolled up aluminum from a soda can sharpened to a point was collected into evidence. April 26 - California Correctional Institution -In Housing Unit #6, Officers were picking up trays after the evening meal, when an inmate stuck an Officer's arm through the open food port and holding what appeared to be a weapon, started to move his arm in a side to side slashing motion. The Officer utilized his O.C. pepper spray through the food port. The inmate was placed in restraints and removed from his cell. The inmate was decontaminated and placed in a holding cell where he was medically evaluated and eventually re-housed without further incident. No staff injuries were reported. CLICK HERE for CCI archive. April 21 - California Correctional Institution - Staff were picking up trays in A Section after count cleared in Housing Unit #2. An inmate's food port was open to collect the food tray, when the inmate sexually assaulted the Officer. The Officer drew their MK9X fogger and sprayed the inmate through the food port and the inmate stopped the sexual assault. April 21 - California Correctional Institution - While being escorted to clinic holding, an inmate attempted to spit in the face of the escorting Officer. Staff utilized O.C. pepper spray, expandable batons and physical force to stop the inmate. The inmate received abrasion to the face and bruises to both legs and shoulder. April 21 - California Correctional Institution - While conducting cell searches in Housing Unit 4A-7C, an inmate was seen trying to flush possible contraband down the toilet in his cell. The Officer at the door ordered the inmate to stop and cuff up. The inmate refused the orders. Staff utilized their MK-9 fogger to gain compliance and stop the inmate from flushing the contraband. April 19 - California Correctional Institution - While attempting to remove an inmate from his cell, the inmate took two rapid steps towards staff in a threatening manner. Staff utilized O.C. pepper spray to stop the threat and close the cell door. The inmate was ordered to submit to restraints but refused. O.C. pepper spray was utilized again to gain compliance. The inmate then complied with staff orders and was placed into restraints. The inmate was decontaminated and medically evaluated. CLICK HERE for CCI archive. April 18 - After receiving a shower, an inmate refused to return to his cell. Staff gave several verbal orders to the inmate to return to his cell. The inmate attempted to come down the stairs of the housing unit, as staff utilized OC pepper spray. The inmate complied with orders to lie in a prone position and he was placed in handcuffs. The inmate was decontaminated and received medical treatment. April 3 - Two Southern Hispanic inmates rushed staff in a program office on the maximum-security, general population yard and attacked staff with inmate manufactured stabbing weapons. OC, batons and physical force were used to subdue the inmates. Two Sergeants and two Officers were sent to outside medical facilities for treatment of lacerations, stab and puncture wounds. One Sergeant and one Officer were treated and released. The other Sergeant was placed in intensive care for treatment of a skull fracture. A fourth Officer was hospitalized for injuries she sustained to her knee when responding to the incident. Both inmates were taken to outside hospitals for treatment, and were subsequently released and transferred to Corcoran State Prison's Administrative Segregation Unit. Two inmate weapons were recovered at the crime scene. The prison was on lockdown and visiting canceled for the weekend. March 31 - In a housing unit dayroom in the Reception Center, a Southern Hispanic attacked a black inmate. An alarm was sounded and the inmates in the dayroom were ordered to get down. An Exact Impact round was deployed with negative results. Floor staff then utilized OC pepper spray; which had the desired effect. March 26 - While escorting an inmate to the Ad-Seg Unit after threatening an Officer, the inmate turned and struck one of the escorting Officers. Staff used physical force to subdue the inmate. The inmate was escorted without further incident. January 24 - On the 4A recreation yard three inmates attacked another inmate slashing him across the left side of his neck and punching him in the head and face. The attacking inmates were re-housed in Administrative Segregation. |
