Last Update: February 27, 2008 January 26 - Salinas Valley State Prison - During a security check inside a Administrative Segregation Unit, officers observed an inmate attacking his cellmate. Staff used pepper spray to stop the assault. Approximately 11 puncture wounds were found on the victim who was sent to an outside hospital. CLICK HERE for Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) archive. January 24 - California Correctional Institution - On the 4A recreation yard three inmates attacked another inmate slashing him across the left side of his neck and punching him in the head and face. January 24 - CSATF, Corcoran II - After alerting staff by banging on his cell door an inmate ran out of a cell bleeding from his upper body. The inmate's cellmate had attacked him with a stabbing weapon. The injured inmate was transported to an outside hospital with puncture wounds to the head, face, neck and back. CLICK HERE for CSATF, Corcoran II archive. January 23 - Paroles - After fleeing from police a Parolee-at-large broke into the home of a 56 year old woman. The PAL stripped naked and then held the victim down on a couch. A Stanislaus Sheriff's K-9 unit led officers to the residence where the victim was rescued and the PAL was arrested. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 23 - Pelican Bay State Prison - Three inmates were involved in a fight on the main yard of Facility A. Chemical agents and one exact impact round were used to stop the fight. CLICK HERE for Pelican Bay State Prison archive. January 23 - CSP-Sacramento - An inmate was found dead in his cell by a Doctor conducting rounds who reported that the inmate was unresponsive. The inmate was found with a plastic garbage bag tied around his neck. The inmate and his cellmate were both members of the "Blood" street gang but were from different regions of California. Both inmates had been placed in Administrative Segregation after committing a stabbing assault together. The cellmate is suspected of murder. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. January 21 - Valley State Prison for Women - An inmate, who was allegedly intoxicated, battered another inmate breaking her victims tooth. CLICK HERE for Valley State Prison archive. January 21 - Paroles - A Parolee-at-large was shot and killed by a San Joaquin County Deputy Sheriff. The incident started as a traffic stop. The PAL and another male were found to be armed. January 21 - CSATF, Corcoran II - An inmate was transported to a Fresno hospital after being attacked by three other inmates and slashed on the left side of his face. On the same day at CSATF an inmate was stabbed while on the dayroom of his housing unit. This inmate was also transported to an outside hospital. CLICK HERE for CSATF, Corcoran II archive. January 21 - Salinas Valley State Prison - A DMH inmate gassed two MTA's through an open food port. Both MTA's were medically evaluated and required to further treatment. January 20 - Kern Valley State Prison - An unidentified white female, approximately 30-35 years old, threw liquid from a "Big Gulp" cup on a correctional officer stationed at the gate house. The officer had approached a white Nissan Altima to determine how many visitor passes the passengers needed. The driver responded "Passes? I got your passes bitch," then threw the contents of her cup into the face of the officer. The driver sped away, executed a U-turn and left the institution. January 19 - Kern Valley State Prison - A southern Hispanic inmate suffered a punctured lung after being stabbed 17 times by two other southern Hispanic inmates. The stabbing occurred as the inmates returned to their housing unit after the evening meal. On direct impact round was fired to stop the attack. January 18 - Pelican Bay State Prison - Over 60 northern and southern Hispanic inmates were involved in a riot on Facility B. The riot occurred simultaneously in Education, the B-2 Dining Room, and the Main Yard. One Mini-14 round was fired as a warning shot. Exact impact rounds and OC were also used to quell the riot. Two inmates were transported by ambulance to outside hospitals although their injuries were not considered life threatening. Two staff members also suffered minor injuries. Staff were able to restrain the inmate. The officer sustained a reddened area to the right side of his face. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. January 17 - High Desert State Prison - Two inmates attacked and battered another inmate during morning yard activities on Facility C, Yard 1. Staff were required to six exact impact rounds and two CN pocket grenades to stop the assault. The inmates sustained minor injuries. CLICK HERE for High Desert State Prison archive. January 17 - Kern Valley State Prison - an inmate being escorted to Administrative Segregation spit in the face of an escorting officer. The inmate was taken to the ground to gain control. January 16 - CSP-Sacramento - A cell extraction was required for an inmate who refused to be transported to another institution. During the extraction, the inmate struck an officer in the head. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. January 16 - Kern Valley State Prison - An inmate was found to be bleeding from an injury to his forehead in Administrative Segregation. The inmate claimed that his cellmate had hit him in the head with a cup. The inmates were re-housed in separate cells. CLICK HERE for Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) archive. January 16 - California Medical Facility - During an in cell medical assessment, an inmate punched a staff doctor in the groin. January 16 - CSATF Corcoran - On a recreation yard two inmates, who appeared to be intoxicated, attacked a correctional officer and a counselor inflicting minor injuries. January 16 - Paroles - A parolee-at-large and his girlfriend were apprehended and found to be in possession of heroin and a loaded 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 15 - Ironwood State Prison - On a dayroom floor, an inmate was slashed by another inmate during evening program. The injuries were not life threatening. CLICK HERE for Ironwood State Prison (ISP) archive. January 15 - Salinas Valley State Prison - An inmate spit through a cell door opening striking a Medical Technical Assistant. CLICK HERE for Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) archive. January 15 - Sierra Conservation Center - A riot occurred between Southern Hispanic and White inmates on the Level II, Mariposa Unit. January 15 - Paroles - A parolee was sentenced to 29 years to life for the March 2006 robbery and murder of off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Maria Cecilia Rosa. Correctional Officer Manuel Gonzalez was murdered by an inmate on January 10, 2005, and Federal Correctional Officer Scott Williams was murdered by an inmate on April 3, 1997. Both Correctional Officers were on-duty at the time of their murders. The inmates in both cases are still awaiting trial. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 15 - High Desert State Prison - On an exercise yard, two inmates broke the ribs and the jaw of another inmate during an assault. The victim was sent to an outside hospital and the attackers were re-housed in Administrative Segregation. CLICK HERE for High Desert State Prison (HDSP) archive. January 15 - Pelican Bay State Prison - An inmate struck an officer in the face while being prepared for transport to the Department of Mental Health. Additional staff used an expandable baton and pepper spray to gain control of the inmate. The assaulted officer suffered some swelling and a cut on the nose. CLICK HERE for Pelican Bay State Prison (PBSP) archive. January 14 - California Rehabilitation Center - In a stairwell two inmates attacked a third inmate who sustained facial injuries. The inmate who was attacked was transported to an outside hospital for evaluation and later transferred to the California Institution for Men. Both attackers were also transferred to CIM. January 14 - Kern Valley State Prison - In the Administrative Segregation Unit two inmates were discovered to have injuries from being in a fight. After the discovery, the inmates again began fighting. Responding staff utilized pepper spray to stop the fight. CLICK HERE for Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) archive. January 14 - Paroles - The San Diego Police report that a parolee and an accomplice were in the process of stealing a truck when the owner heard his vehicle being started and chased after the thieves - jumping into the back of the truck. The Parolee drove erratically trying to throw the owner from the back of the truck eventually losing control hitting a tree and other vehicles before rolling the truck. The owner of the vehicle died from the injuries he sustained. The accomplice was caught at the scene and the parolee was apprehended a short time later. Homicide charges are pending. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 13 - Salinas Valley State Prison - During an escort, a hand-cuffed inmate managed to break free from an officer and struck him in the chest with his elbow. Also at SVSP, on January 12, an inmate threw a cup of coffee at an MTA then began striking the MTA in the face. Another MTA responded and both staff members were able to subdue the inmate. January 12 - California Correctional Center - A female visitor was arrested for attempting to bring methamphetamine, heroin, methadone, and barbiturates into the facility. CLICK HERE for California Correctional Center (CCC) archive. January 12 - High Desert State Prison - Two southern Hispanic inmates stabbed another inmate approximately 30 times. An officer fired a round from a mini-14 to stop the deadly assault. The round struck one attacker and severed his thumb. The inmate who was stabbed was airlifted to a Reno hospital. The attacking inmate with the severed thumb was housed at an outside hospital. The other assailant was re-housed in Administrative Segregation. CLICK HERE for High Desert State Prison (HDSP) archive. January 12 - Paroles - Two Parolees at-large barricaded themselves inside a Fresno apartment after robbing the inhabitants armed with a handgun and a sawed-off shotgun. The parolees surrendered to local authorities after a lengthy stand-off involving a Fresno SWAT team. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 12 - Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) - An inmate struck an officer in the chest with her fist after becoming disruptive in the medical clinic. Another CCWF inmate threw an unknown liquid on two officers in the Administrative Segregation Unit (ASU). January 12 - Paroles - A parolee led police on a high-speed chase through the city of Redlands before crashing his pickup truck into several parked cars in a residential area. During a subsequent search of the vehicle by Redlands Police approximately $2000 worth of methamphetamine was found. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 11 - Kern Valley State Prison - An inmate was placed in a crisis bed after kicking a nurse and attempting to bite the finger of an officer while resisting medication mandated under a Kayhea order. CLICK HERE for Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) archive. January 10 - Paroles - A parolee was arrested for being involved in the burglary of several Target Department stores. The parolee's was found in possession of over $15,000 of stolen merchandise. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 10 - Paroles - The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported that a parolee-at-large (PAL) evaded police for more than two hours after a vehicle chase. The PAL was driving a stolen vehicle which he eventually abandoned in the center divider of I-215. After abandoning the vehicle he ran across the southbound lanes of the highway and hid inside a minivan in a nearby neighborhood. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 9 - Paroles - A parolee at-large was apprehended in a Riverside residence in possession of 9mm handgun and a Thompson submachine with loaded magazines. The parolee is a suspect in a homicide that occurred before Christmas where he allegedly shot the victim and the victim's brother. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 8 - Shafter Community Correctional Facility - About ten White and ten Hispanic inmates rioted at the Shafter Community Correctional Facility. Staff used pepper spray to stop the fighting. January 8 - Calipatria State Prison - Two Inmates nearly beat another inmate to death. The attackers ignored commands to stop the assault which forced responding staff to use a blast grenade and pepper spray to end the beating. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. Due to the severity of his injuries the victim was later transported to a trauma center. January 7 - Corcoran State Prison - An officer was assaulted while escorting an inmate to a medical appointment. The inmate kicked the officer in the lower leg and continued to yell and spit on staff after being placed in holding cell. The officer returned to duty. CLICK HERE for Corcoran State Prison archive. January 7 - Ironwood State Prison - An inmate was stabbed 14 times. The inmate was transported to an outside medical facility and after treatment was returned to the prison. January 7 - CSP-Solano - An officer was assaulted by an inmate who used his shoulder to knock the officer to the floor. The officer was conducting a clothed body search of the inmate. The officer sustained minor injuries. CLICK HERE for CSP-Solano archive. January 4 - Paroles - A parolee was arrested by special agents from the Office of Correctional Safety. The parolee was wanted in connection with a woman found raped, beaten and left for dead on a dog-walking trail in the Bay Area. The victim later died. CLICK HERE for Paroles archive. January 2 - Avenal State Prison - Nearly 50 white and southern Hispanic inmates engaged in a riot at Avenal State Prison. Two inmates were taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital.
