CCPOA - 5150 Hotline from Lance Corcoran5150 Update - June 14, 2007 Hello and thank you for calling the CCPOA 5150 hotline. Today is Monday, June 14th, which is Flag Day and it's the anniversary of the founding of the US Army in 1775. Please display your flags with pride today and take a moment to pray for our brave men and women who continue to serve our country in hostile territories. This is also Correctional Peace Officer's Memorial week. So please take a moment to remember all of our brothers and sisters across this nation who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. In news from Sacramento, yesterday at Raley Field in West Sacramento over 3,000 CCPOA members and their families attended our rally at Raley also known as Field of Dreams I. It was a spectacular success. Thank you to all the members who attended. Members from as far away as Blythe, El Centro and San Diego were there. Buses rolled in from CRC, Chino, Lancaster, Wasco, North Kern and Salinas Valley State Prison. Members from the upper Northern part of the state were their representing Susanville and Pelican Bay. Camps, paroles and members of the Youth Authority all gathered to voice their support for our contract. Lieutenant Governor, Cruz Bustamante; former Senator and Assemblyman and member of the Board of Equalization, Bill Leonard; and Assembly Member Rudy Bermudez also attended and spoke in support of our profession. Representatives from Pennsylvania, Nevada, Connecticut, New York and Corrections USA were also on hand. CCPOA President Mike Jimenez made it clear, we are mad as hell and we are not going to take it any more. There are ways to save this state money but the savings are not all going to come off the backs of correctional peace officers. Our message was loud and clear, we stand unified in any fight to undo the integrity of our contract. In legislative news: A number of bills will be heard tomorrow in Assembly Public Safety Committee tomorrow. SB 1731 seeks to invalidate 909 (d) of our current MOU. This bill seeks to remove the requirement that complaints made by inmates or parolees would no longer be provided to officers who request a copy of the complaint. Also up is SB 1352. This bill is another attack on our MOU. This bill would expand the ability of the Office of Inspector General to access member's personnel, training, IST, medical, citizens complaint and/or supervisory file without having to obtain a court order or subpoena. Next up SB 1341. This bill is commonly referred to as the code of conduct bill. This bill requires the Director of Corrections to adopt a code of conduct, which imposes on Bargaining Unit 6 employees a duty to report misconduct and a duty to cooperate with outside agency investigations. CCPOA continues to oppose these bills in their present form and we will be at the committee hearing to voice our objections. Both CDC Director, Jeanne Woodford and Agency Secretary Rod Hickman were scheduled to appear before the Senate Rules Committee for confirmation tomorrow however that has now been rescheduled to June 23rd. California ranks 44th in the nation regarding inmate to staff ratios. In many states it take 2 correctional officers to do the job that we do with one. Despite having one of the worst inmate to staff ratio; we don't have prolonged hostage situations like Arizona; we don't have mass escapes from maximum security prisons like Texas, and we don't lose entire prisons like New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. California's correctional peace officers are the nations finest. Remember you are doing a damn good job and you are worth every penny you are paid. Don't forget to check www.ccpoa.org for the latest news. And lastly, there was a rumor that Agency Secretary Rod Hickman was going to attend our rally and while there were clowns at the rally they were real clowns for the kids. Rod however did not show up. Thank you for calling and be safe. ![]() |
