5150 Hotline

CCPOA - 5150 Hotline from Lance Corcoran

5150 Update - June 3, 2004
Hello and thank you for calling the 5150 hotline. Today is Thursday, June 3rd and this is the latest from Sacramento.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the largest law enforcement rally in the history of California. On Sunday, June 13th, CCPOA will be holding a rally at Raley Field in Sacramento from 10 am to 2 pm. Every correctional peace officer and your family members are invited to attend. Why should you attend? Because being a correctional peace officer is our chosen profession and we are proud of the job we do. By attending this event you will be casting your vote in person for California's continued support for our collective bargaining agreement, you will stand in recognition of the onslaught of assaults on staff that are increasing everyday, you will be giving the public insight into the dangerous games being played with staffing levels and the threats to public safety, you will help to bring full attention to the positive contributions made by our members to our communities, and what our bargaining unit has done before and during the state's current budget crises and finally you will hear what steps we are preparing for the future of the correctional peace officer series.

Ultimately it comes down to this: we have a job to do. We continue to do it with dedication and integrity. The state and its managers must show the same integrity when doing their job solving the state's money problems. We have shown a willingness to cooperate under intense scrutiny, under the largest staffing deficit in the nation, under public and personal attacks on our character fueled by misguided individuals and now we must call a stop to the riots outside the prison walls. It's the 9th inning, the state's budget is in overtime and we will not stand down.

As reported in the last hotline, Senator Jackie Speier authored a resolution that was signed by 16 other Democratic Senators which says that they will not support a state budget which contains a full funding of our pay raise scheduled for July 2004. Thank you to the members who have called her office to express your feelings. For a full list of Senators with phone number and links to their website check www.ccpoa.org, click on Code 3, then click CCPOA news. Remember to remain professional and that this is a toll call for anyone outside of the 916 area code. Don't make the mistake of calling from an institutional phone. Many have reported that the staff who answer the phone will not talk if you are not from their district. Don't worry, our message is still being heard.

On legislative bills:

SB 1731, SB 1352 and SB 1341 moved to the Assembly Public Safety Committee this week and are scheduled to be taken up on June 15. CCPOA will be there to defend our rights. To see copies of our opposition letters go to CCPOA.org and click on Legislative Department, then News/5150.

Don't forget the rally at Raley, Sunday June 13th. There will be free BBQ, refreshments and family activities for all who attend so bring the whole family. Many chapter's are coordinating bus transportation so check with your chapter president. For our chapter's in the extreme southern part of the state, please accept our apologies for having the event in Sacramento. We know that you will be with us in spirit. Thank you for calling, remember to check ccpoa.org for President Mike Jimenez' latest message, and don't forget to save your dollar a day.
