Newspaper advocates for more private prisons in California, gets numerous “facts” wrong

The California Department of Corrections has about one month to reduce the state’s inmate population to 117,000, a target previously approved by the three-judge federal panel overseeing the state’s crowded penal system.

In a recent filing with the jurists, lawyers for the Department of Corrections indicated that the state will likely finish 3,000 inmates above its target, which means that the state’s prison population will remain at 147 percent of design capacity.

The state has asked for a six-month extension on the deadline to reach 117,000 inmates and, in turn, a six-month extension on the court’s June deadline to reduce the prison population to 110,000…
